September 25th.2020

Thank you to all parents /guardians for taking time out of their busy lives to have a conversation with the teachers. We are excited to have a great year ahead with your child/children.

In our room on Thursday we: 

1. Reviewed the Grasslands Region. Ask me about the Land, Climate, Plants, and Animals.

2. We started a water colour art project. Ask me what we painted...HINT- it is a plant we can find in the Grasslands Region.

3. In Physical Education we completed the Terry Fox Run. 

4. Ask me to show you my spelling test.

5- In Math, we continue to learn patterns in tables using input/output.

 In Room 3 today :

 1- We completed the reading comprehension after listening to chapter one. Reading the questions before listening to the story helped us understanding and answering the questions correctly .

We have added some more vocabulary words to out personal dictionaries. Ask me to tell you what those words are. 

2- In Math, we did another word problem based on patterns in tables. We learnt that the word problems have extra information which isn't necessary to solve them. Sometimes word problems require 2 steps to figure out the answer. 

3- We watched a slide show  prepared by Mr.Pivarnyk on Terry Fox . 

We have Terry Fox Run tomorrow .Please dress for the weather.

We have started working on a page on Terry Fox in our visual journals.

In Room 3 today:

1- We worked on  "Word Study "and "Spelling". We stored words with constant clusters into  long and short vowel sounds. We clapped the words to see the number of  syllables in it.

2- In Math,  we made increasing patterns  by attaching different shapes and learned how  that  information is used in a table. We also used dot paper to draw our own hexagons to see how to count the perimetere units properly. 

3-We read the next book in the series of" 7 habits of happy kids".

4- We had Fine Arts with Riopel.

In Room 3 today :

1- We sorted out  nouns into 3 categories ; person, place and thing..We also practiced our spelling words of the week using cue cards , writing on the white board and by testing our friends verbally .

2- In Math , we practiced making increasing /decreasing patterns on a geo board .It was interesting to see each triangle has 2 equal sides .

We also did our first word problem using our knowledge of patterns in numbers on a calendar.

3- We  have started working on a page  about the first element of design,"Line" in our visual Journals .

Today in Room 3 :

Math

We practised our patterns in Math. Ask me how many patterns I was able to create on my 100's chart. I also learned how to create a legend to let others be able to comprehend my work and we caught up on some of the work we hadn't finished over the past week.

Social

We continued learning about The  6 Natural Regions of Alberta. Ask me to remind you what they are:

6. Canadian Shield

Language Arts

We  made cue cards and completed word work activities to help us learn our new words. 

Other

We had our  first In-class virtual assembly. It was cool to virtually see all our other school friends.

 In Room 3 today :

 

1- We practiced our words and consonant blends from the word study list .We will start our spelling words of the week for grade 3/4 on Monday. Students will  practice theses words using multiple  literacy  activities through out the week.There will be a spelling test every Friday.

2- In Math, today we learned about  different patterns found in numbers. We  looked at a100's chart and color coded the number patterns found on it.We also made a legend to show the  colors representing the pattern.

3- A letter is sent home today regarding information about parent / teacher conferences .

1- We drew our own increasing patterns and extended it to 5 terms .
We learned how to write a pattern sentences  showing the pattern rule.


2- We have started reading "7 habits of  happy kids".Today we read the first book of the series called
"Just the way I am "
and discussed :


a-What is a habit?
b- Are all habits good?
c- Is it hard /easy to develop/change a habit?
d-How can we change our habits to become a better person?


3- We started our parts of a sentence study today.We talked about "noun" and types of nouns?

4- We have started our novel study" Third Grade Angels". Today we read the first chapter of the book.Ask me to tell you what was the chapter about? What are some of the characters introduced in the first chapter? What is the setting of the story?We write down the new vocabulary words in our personal dictionaries .

5- In Art,  we learned about elements of design.

We read another book about  growth mindset .
We had a great  discussion and asked some really good questions .We also  leaned some new vocabulary  .

•  What is a growth mindset ?
• How can you develop the positive thinking when things seem negative  ?
• What does dismay , perplexed ,baffled  and eaves mean ?

We picked 3 goals for this year to work on.Two of them are academic and one character  goal.

We continued working on our autobiographies using self editing tools.

We did some more practice making increasing /decreasing patterns using different rules.

We have completed our "I Am" art and it looks amazing !

Today we had our first fire drill at Vista Heights.  The students displayed  an excellent fire drill behaviour.

Today in Room 3 we:

1- Looked at many examples of increasing and decreasing patterns. We also learned  about the core, a term and the pattern rule .

Ask me to give you an example of an increasing /decreasing pattern.




 

2- We read "The Quite Contrary Man" 

Ask me to tell you about the story.
How was the main character different than the rest of the people of the town?

3- We looked at a paragraph and edited it. We focused on punctuation and  capitalization to help us self edit our "Autobiographies".

4- We started learning about The Natural Regions of Alberta. 

Ask me: How many regions are in Alberta?

1-We continued working on our "biographies" . We used the information from our draft to build complete sentences. We also talked about using the "writer's process" . Editing is an important part of writing .

We used a map and a globe to look for our favorite  places .

 


2-  We had Fine Arts with Mrs.Riopel.

3- In Math we continued our study about patterns. We went outside the school and looked for
 man- made and natural patterns.

We had another great day at school !



1- We read

While reading the book , our focus was on being brave by participating in class activities regardless of the right and wrong answer.

2- We did an introduction to "Biographies". Over the next few days we will learn the elements of a biography and the steps required.

3- We had our first Fine Arts lesson with Mrs. Riopel.

4- Math is  everywhere.In Math we started our unit on 'Patterns' .Ask me where is math  around us ?We will conitnue learning about patterns in detail over the next few days .

We would like to welcome all students, parents/guardians to our grade 3/4 blog. 

Throughout the year, this blog will be a source of communication between school and home. 

The information posted will explain some of the daily activities and what our class is working on as well as the upcoming events and important dates.

Parents are encouraged to check the blog daily.

Reminders:

·     Students must take home all their items from lunch. This includes all garbage and unfinished food. We recommend, you send a small baggy for them to use for unwanted items.

·     All students should have received two reusable cloth masks. Please send a clean mask with your child every day to school.

On our first day of school we:

• -      Talked about the safety rules in the school and in our classroom 
• -      Played some ice-breaker games to introduce ourselves in a fun way 
• -      Read books about what makes us unique 
• -      Brainstormed positive traits and filled in a silhouette

We had a fabulous first day of school and we are looking forward to the rest of the year.
